Tie a Clovehitch

[dropcap cap=T]echnically, a Hitch knot is used to tie the end of a rope to a thing. A Lashing knot is used the hold one thing to another thing and is an obviously important skill in outrigger canoeing for attaching the ama to the canoe.  This article will describe the Clove Hitch. Other Hitches and Lashings are covered in additional articles in this series. LEARN TO TIE THIS KNOT by clicking READ MORE>>>[/dropcap]

Like the Bowline, knowing how to tie this simple knot will help you learn how to tie up a canoe routinely to a dock or in an emergency. (All our canoes have a heaving line on board in a small red nylon pouch that can be used in emergencies. It is a Transport Canada requirement.)

The Clove Hitch is one of the simplest marine knots.  There are more ways to tie it than illustrated here and there are several derivations of this knot: rolling hitch, constrictor knot, etc.

  • Used to attach a line to a post, rail, pole or any other round object inluding another rope;
  • It is an excellent choice for tieing a canoe to a dock where tide movement is not a factor;
  • It is self tightening under strain and will not slip;
  • Is realitively easy to untie, even when wet;
  • Is an easy knot to remember and well worth learning.
  • Great for hitching your horse to a hitching rail!
